Hi all,
This is my next project. A Scotts pine with a massive trunk and lots of branches.
Should be quite a challenge to get something good out of it.
My full grown male red Cattle dog for size comparison.

Where did you find such great stock like that? Something tells me that your dog is very excited about the new tree!

I bought this from Conifer Corner in the Dandenongs near Melbourne. I have been growing it on for about 5 or 6 years and have occasionally trimmed back some strong growth.
This one will definately not be a semi cascade!

Grant, I cant wait to see what youll do with this one. How big is the trunk girth? Is it grafted?

It would be grafted onto normal pinus sylvestris but there is no graft visible.
Circumferance is 35 cm so that makes it ? diameter.
Hmm.Lets see. Circumferance is Pi r squared. So that makes it....
C = 22/7 x R squared
35 = 22/7 x R squared
Can't find the calculator!

Pi x R squared is the area Grant.
Pi x diameter is the circumference, so circumference divided by Pi = diameter
35cm divided by Pi = approx 11.14cm diameter.
You must be a 'young-un' Grant. When we went to school calculators hadn't been invented - we worked it all out on paper
Hey - your tree is just under 4 1/2 inches in diameter
Back to the real subject. It's going to be very interesting to see what you do with this nice healthy specimen. Great looking dog as well - looks like he's standing guard over your 'Prize'

Do'h,
You're right about about the diameter. Silly me.
The dogs name is JEd. When he was young he would eat/inhale anything so we called him J Edgar Hoover; shortened to JEd. He's a bugger of a dog! Very strong willed and willful.

Love your tree and looking forward to seeing the progress. Hopefully we will all learn something in the process.

Do you mean "Conifer Grdens"?

I love this particular variety of sylvestrus, I purchased its brother from conifer gardens about 6 months ago and took it to Ballarat where we did a demo with Hiro. We removed 70% of the height the scar measures 6cm and the new height is about 30 cm. It is powering on at present with lots of new growth.
The direction you take with this tree will be particularly interesting for me.

Hey Gerard,
I'd love to see Hiro's drawing of that tree.

Will start another thread Webbos
But in answer to your other question you can see a nice graft about 1cm above the soil, I expect Grants tree will be similar.
