Another Urban Yamadori Juniper - 7 years in the pot

Hi guys, I'm new here. Only discovered this site a few days ago.

Just thought I'll share a picture of my Juniper. 7 years in the pot and many more years of refining to go. 95% of the branching were made from a single branch which was bent close to 180 degrees to form the crown and main branches. You can see the bend at the top of the tree.

Took a while and lots of pinching to get the foliage compact, still not ideal, but should improve with time. The Shari still needs a bit of refining too. Picture taken after this year's repotting so please pardon the bare top soil. The tree measures 57cm from the surface of the soil.

Your tree is awesome Mark. You've done a great job on it. Wish I could find material like that up here.

Very nice there and Welcome to AusBonsai :-)

Do you have progression shots of the work you have done on this one? this would have to be one of the best I have seen in OZ

Thanks for the kind words guys.

Here is another picture of the tree before pinching. Although I think it looks better here, you do have to keep up with the pinching to ensure that the scales are nice and compact. It should fill out again in a few months:

I couldn't find a picture of the tree when it was first dug up, the best I can do is this picture from 5 yrs ago:

Here is another one that I'll be working on in the future. The branch placements are like the previous tree. Very far from the nebari. There will be lots of bending I think:

Have a nice weekend guys

G,Mark that is a very nice tree, where do you get your Akadama from?, do you belong to any clubs ? or are you, one of the many that just go it alone.

Cheers Pup

That earlier shot shows that you have reduce the top foliage substantially over the intervening time and increased it lower down.

A great example of the "less is more" an ddo not be afraid to do reduce to improve.

The new tree will be interesting to watch the development of too :-)

Hi Mark ,Welcome aboard Ausbonsai . Absolutely stunning , this tree speaks volumes of character . This is proof that good quality urban Yamadori can be found . Yamadori is everywhere just need a keen eye to locate it and some times more front than Myers to ask for it .Look forward to more posts .Cheers Alpineart

I get my akadama from Bonsai Emporium. And no, I'm not currently part of any club. Not that I've got anything against clubs, it is just that I am too busy with work and kids.

Spot on mate. Material is everywhere. You just have to open your eyes. I see these junipers everywhere. In fact, there are heaps (more than 20 so far) I've seen within 2kms of where I live with way much more potential than this one. The trick is keeping the tree alive and healthy enough to train. And guys, do not be deterred by the gangly and sparse foliage of these landscape junipers. With time and patience, they can be made compact (or you can graft shimpaku on it).
