I havent posted much of late and with all the recent posts on privet i thought i might jump on the band wagon. Here is a small leaf privet i have been working on 16 months since i dug it from a local creek bed. the tree started out as a 20ft tall tripple trunk shrub.
the tree after collection potted up and pruned down to two trunks
after 8 months of growth the trees preliminary branches were placed. note there is a big dead section on the trunk which has died back due to sunburn
due to the sunburn and the large prunning scar from the third trunk some basic carving was done.
after another 8 months growth the tree is starting to become fairly overgrown again. time for some more work
defoliated and some branches reduced to get an idea of structure now time for thinning and anoth basic wiring.
after wiring is complete and removal or a dead root due to sunburn.

this tree still has a very long way to go but i feel it is on the right track. in the future there are still a few hours of carving to be done and it can probably go into a bonsai pot soon with a few root grafts attached.

You've got a nice tree going there Jarryd. I much prefer small leaf Privet to the broad leaf one (and I do have both). I think the leaves look more in proportion to the trunk - no matter what size it is. I also think they're easier to work on - and maybe a bit more 'forgiving'.

Well done mate, fantastic growth in such a short period of time. Where I live that amount of growth would take a lot longer. If I may suggest, the two leaders on the secondary trunk appear to be competing, so the removal of one could improve it.

I have only been working with privet for a short time but they are quickly becoming a favourite the growth rate up here is excellent, even in pots.

this one is definately on the right way, a bit more carving will do this a treat to get the main trunk to smooth in well

yeah i realy enjoy working with small leaf privet, and have extensive areas from which i can collect, they infest the area here.

good to hear possitive comments on the trees direction, i like to style more naturalistic canopies then formal ones.

watto the two leaders on the secondary trunk are not a massive concern for me as they dont clash quite as much in real life one is a subtrunk off the back, as this tree ramifies it may have to come off i shall keep it in mind

anyone have suggestions for a pot i will begin looking very soon and hopefully have it potted up before the end of the season.

you have a very characteristic style of your own mate, and thats a good thing, Ant said something about one of my trees a while back which describes this sort of styling (which I try and create myself ) it is organised chaos. very natural!

I would use a chocolate/brown shallow oval tray with a slight outward curve I reckon. much like the one I have one of my privets in this one ->

That colour suits the tree to a "T' I reckon, just needs to be half as deep as it is like in the last pic ). Now, good luck finding one. By the way, bloody nice tree you have happening there mate, well done and good luck with it, those small leaf privets sure are fun to work with.
