Just a quick couple of pics of a cork bark yatsubusbu black pine i styled and repotted into its first bonsai pot today. Tree is still a few years off but is amazing in its vigor and the amount of buds it sets each year. I need to thin out buds more but for now i will wait and see how it responds . The tree was purchased 2 years ago as stock at which i thought i got a bargain. It did have issues with a cascade branch just about unbendable , reverse taper and a few other things . Over time i have come to appreciate its faults and i think the pot suits it well. I was trying to mimic kumiras white pine cascade he styled in pines series masters bonsai today book and the pot is simular i think. If anyone is interested in soil its 50% diatomite and red scoria and a good potting mix sifted twice.

amazingly healthy! the yatsabusa make great little trees! shame they can be hard to locate! although you seem to have scored some good ones!

They are a nice pine hey Noah. I picked one up for the Literati comp but new nothing about them before I did. I would have to check but I did not think they where so much a dwarf. My tag states conical in shape with small needles I think.
I think I can get some more finger thick about $20

Brent Waltson must have the most comprehensive species guide on the internet. States small in stature so guess that means dwarf but still fast growing
Maybe my upright form is a cutting from higher up on the tree

7470 Pinus thunbergii 'Yatsubusa' A congested Japanese black pine with very short internodes and stark white fat buds. The foliage and bark are typical of the species, but it is the ability of this cultivar to break buds everywhere that make it so intriguing. Four or five year old grafts are so dense that you cannot see into them. It is a fast growing cultivar despite its short stature and will form a stout trunk as fast as the species. This is a superb choice for smaller pine bonsai, and our most popular Black Pine cultivar. Pictured is a two year '01 graft.

Mine is ungrafted. Is yours as well

Thanks brett interesting. Mine is grafted but nice and low . Mine also is apperantly a cork bark dwarf variety? now whether it is or its just got age i dont know ? either way its nice and flaking

Hi Noah, you have done a beautiful job of styling this tree, just be sure to thin the buds to 2 at any one point, encourage back budding so all the growth is not on the tips only and keep working on stepping the foliage.
