Hi,
I stuffed up and posted a couple of pics without adding comment. The two maples shown have been repotted about a week ago. My question is they both need a chop, the trident needs to be chopped just above each of the smallest lower branchlets on each of the three trunks so I can start from scratch to restyle the tree. The Japanese maple...altho hard to see with the backgrownd plant...has all it's growth coming from the one spot and I want to chop it just below the reverse taper above the nice trunk feature and hope it will resprout and grow so I can restart this one to. Can I do the chops now or is it to late. I live in Vic

No problems doing trunk chops now.
Some people do them thru winter ( I do), and others will wait till spring

Thanks for the info. Is there anyway in particular that a chop should be done such as angles, facing behind front etc.

Rudy. I would airlayer the top of the tree in the first pic. It will be come a nice broom style tree for the top and then chop the bottom down low and grow new branches for another broom or just leave the bottom part till the new branches develop then select and carve the trunk.
