hey guys,

i luckily purchased this great Japanese apricot today. it stands about 60cm high and is easilt that wide. it has a huge curved trunk....perhaps 3.5 - 4 inches across. it has many thick branches and loads of buds ready to burst. i will attach as many pcs as i can and any advice or virts will be greatly appreciated

yeh i got it from leong today. he had about 6. he doesnt get many each year so i was very lucky

Last year, he sold some very nice ones for somewhere between $400 and $500 each. They are much better quality than Rays material, but Ray has them for only about $200 to $250. How much did you pay for that one?

Wow. It's beautiful as it is. Just needs a suitable pot I think. There is no way we can get something like that for that price range here at Brisbane.

i paid about the same as you. was not aware ray had them. i am happy with my stock though. how have urs come along? do u find them easy to work on?

i dont knwo if they grow too well in brissy. think it might be too warm. it could go right in a pot but it needs a little work. lots of thick cris crossing branches. needs to be thinned out and them built up again with finer ramification

I didnt buy any from Leong last year because they all got sold very quickly. I couldnt save my money quickly enough. But there was one huge one that I had my eyes on, but within a few days someone bought it and it put me off from looking at the rest of his Apricots. Ray doesnt put out that many each year and his Apricots are cut back pretty high so you end up having a tall straight trunk. Leongs are cut initially quit low whilst theyre in the ground, so you have many low branching options to pick from. I would be happy with your tree as well.

I have 2 in Gladstone, keep in partial shade over summer, last year I managed THREE flowers. LOL

They might not flower real well, but they do survive.

That is fantastic material - i love the trunk movement.
I really love trees that flower over winter.... looks like i need to start saving for next winter....

From the photos, I can't give any advice but echo your suggestion of removing the crossing branches and thinning the canopy - unfortunately this might means making some tough decisions regarding the removal of some fairly major branches...

Really nice stock tree you got there, the trunk is absolutely magic.

To my eye the branches seem overly thick and out of proportion to such a trunk. Hard decision but I would be looking at removing most of the thickest ones and then rebuilding the branch structure over a few years. It would also take this tree away from the broom look it currently has. trunk2.jpg has a nice line that extends up along one of the branches creating taper and more movement to match the lower portion of trunk.
