At the recent BSV sale day I purchased this trident, after some initial pruning I am looking for ideas / virts on where I should go from here

Pick about the forth leader on the last pic and chop the rest. Then wait to see what comes this next season.

I would chop here and regrow from there. Nice trunk. Also I would be setting up a plan for the roots. The large root on the right could have some cambium removed add some rooting hormone and plant deeper to create some new roots. If you chop the top this year leave major root work for next year when there are more shoots to help the roots recover!

Great stock. Have you thought of tilting the tree (from the angle in 003) over to the right? Big root disappears a bit, the massive trunk sweeps over almost horizontally, and then you build the foliage layers vertically up from there. Maybe more drama.

006 is the front for me, roots and branches are easy, grow or graft. this is the year to learn more about grafting. btw please style as deciduous, not conifer

Far too many people have the misconception that to create an impression of old age branches must sweep downwards. While this is correct for most conifers it is usually not realistic in deciduous species in many cases it will adversely affect the growth and health of a branch

You are welcome Gezz and you are also welcome to bring it over and we get the dremel out on it and shape up those cuts. As for the rest; beautifully said.
