hey dump; its either a thuja occentalis or a blue arizona cypress. To me it looks like you have have taken out some very important lower limbs.

crucial to the first step in making a good tree.

Hi Dumper, I always like to start pruning conifers from the outside then work your way in that way you get to keep foliage closer to the trunk where you need it. I like to work with younger branches rather than trying to force movement into the older ones. The two trunks on your tree kind of work against each other rather than flowing together.

Hi dumper, you may need to put this one aside for a little while, be patient, I'm sure something good will come of it.

G'day Dumper, agree with everything that has been said here. Taking off the lower branches which could have been incorporated into the trees design(think jins) might have made the decision for you. I think the tree most likely is in the lower trunk. You could layer of the other trunk and have one semi cascade and one upright. Whatever the decision i wouldnt touch it till next year, get it growing again first.

thanks all.
i'll put all input into consideration
i wont be working on the tree at the moment. i'll let it recover.
about the lower branches. it was a hard decision for me to make to take it off on site.. the tree was around 50cm high. spread out around 1.8 metres.
i had to do it quick because it was time to rush home for dinner too,

The trunks won't live together. The right hand trunk moves nicely off to the side, the left is too straight to do much with, but there might be a good layer higher up.
Just my thoughts, from a distance.

The tree is Juniperus chinensis var. 'Sargentii' common name shimpaku juniper from China & Japan. It has the typical adult scale foliage common to this species. Notice the interlocking sections on the foliage this helps to identify this species. Also the reddish brown bark is common feature to all Juniperus species. The fruit type is a cone being a true conifer. The tree has these tiny fleshy round fruits. These are called drupes. Roger

Sorry puson but i disagree. The foliage is the wrong colour. It is also nowhere near as dense as the shimpaku i own or have seen.
John, i recommend you do a google search of all the possibilities and see what fits best.
Cheers,
Joel
