Tree Lucerne..Tagasaste..For Bonsai?

I have planted this Tree Lucerne in a pot 3 years ago as an experiment to see how it handled pot culture. Well, it has done everything right as i have only fed it infrequently and watered it when i remember. It is away from my Bonsai area so i do not think of it. it grows like mad (only three years to this from a sapling). In hindsight i wish i had shaped it . It flowers, It has aged, gnarly bark, it has small racemes of leaves, it has scent and is weeping. It sounds superb. So, has anybody have one to show us as Bonsai or has anybody else had a play with this species. Over to all of you out there with any experience at all. Go here for all the info on it.

It is becoming obvious that nobody has had any experience with these species and i will have to go it alone on developing them. Oh well, we will see how they respond. :(

gday bodhi :D

unfortunately i cant help with the species, today is the first time i have heard of them, from what you are saying and the picture they look like they could make a nice tree. the growth rate looks to be quite good to. to have been in a pot its whole life and not be completly looked after as such, it has quite a reasonable rate.

i beleive you will be able to turn this one into something nice :D do they back bud well?

jamie :D

sounds like a perfect species for bonsai mate! a bit like the clerodendrons, i didnt even know what they were for a long time then i got two of them and they are one of my favourite trees! if these back bud easily i would presume they would airlayer well and strike from cuttings pretty well too :D

will be keeping my eyes out for them!

Hi Raymond, no it died after its first root prune. I have a few others and repotted it at a different time (Summer) instead of spring and it survived. Nothing to speak of yet though.

Unlucky, I suppose it's trial and error with these. I was interested because one of my colleagues was pulling small ones out in their backyard where they grow like weeds.

Lucerne trees are similar to rosemary. They hate having their roots disturbed.
