I’ve had this juniper since 2002.I started work on it in 2004( sorry no pictures). When I bought it from the nursery it stood about 1.5 Meters.

As with many of us I had to cut it in half to get it into my car, much to the disgust of the nursery owner.

It now stands at 75cm x 55cm.

It is due for some work shortly.

Hi Peter and all,

The Blaauws juniper is a much underused juniper that is thoroughly suitable for bonsai, especially from Sydney south and inland. Not so good I believe for Brisbane and further north.

In California they call it the Blue Shimpaku.

I have a juniper x media but I am guessing that is not then same thing?

It isn't a bar, strictly speaking, and removing that branch would upset the balance of this bonsai.

Fabulous tree, Peter! What a stroke of luck, finding a Blaaui that size.

G'day Peter, I certainly wouldnt remove any branches but i can see a sticking point at the two lower branches where the eye stops travelling upward to absorb the rest of the tree. Have you considered deadwooding the bottom right hand branch and making a feature of that part of the tree. It could make the little difference to turn the tree from great to stunning. Either way a fantastic tree.

The left and right lower branches were a point of concern when I posted it on the BT forum. The left side was a problem because of the lack of a branch to fit in.

I will look closer at the right branch.

The lowest branch on the right grows at the place of the trunk chop. I'd hesitate to remove it for that reason, as well as for the feature it represents, i.e. of a low sweeping line. Beautiful!

G,day Peter I would not chop any branches I would use wire to bring both branches more to a 45degree angle over the corners more pronounced and wire the secondary and tertiary branches so as to fill in more foliage pads.

Where the original chop is I would refine the area, at the moment all the bareness, is to my way of thinking, too pronounced. With refinement wiring it will be a beautiful tree.
