Hi people,

Our local bonsai club is thinking of arranging for Tony Bebb to come and do some workshops later this year, and want firm numbers before they book. Being a newbie, I don't know who he is or whether to put my hand up and say I will go. Any comments?

I saw tony at the last AABC and was impressed with him. He use to own a nursery in Brisbane i believe and has been into bonsai for years. I also believe he is recognised overseas (China i think) and is quite active on the demo and workshop front. My thoery is present any demo artist with a stick in a pot and the final product will be a stick in a pot. Try to present him with good material, something with girth and branches and let him loose to do his magic. Tony also explains his methods and reasons well, something beginners will find invaluable.

I got Tony down here for the Cherry Blossom Festival and he was great to work with.

Definately one of the better demostrators!!! a must do, see and listen.

GO! He is very good with Bonsai plus beginners, intermediates and advanced students.

We had him hear on the central coast a few weeks ago, he did a workshop one day an a demo the other. Be workshop was great and he dealt helped out on everyones trees with great ideas. I didn't get to go the demo but o hear it was good, he is apparently an excellent demonstrator.
It's well worth it I think.

I have had the pleasure of working with Tony on a couple of occassions. Both times were an absolute pleasure, he is articulate and comedic. He can work and understand with the Newbie as you call youself and also poeple like me.

So my advice would be to go, and enjoy yourself and learn, you will not regret it. Cheers Pup

Thanks for all the encouragement, people. I am now wondering, what do I take to the workshops? Most of my plants are but seedlings - we have no nurseries here that sell advanced stock. How far along should the plants be? eg for shohin size, what sort of trunk thickness would I need?

You can always take a number of seedlings of various size and thickness and make a group.

It should have plenty of branches to work with trunk girth is at this stage not important if you do not have it.
Trunk ratio to height is usually 1-6 so if you have something like that go for it remember he will teach you how to best style it.

If you listen and watch the other participants advice from him you will learn heaps. Grants advice is also a good thought.

Tony's a top stylist and a great bloke, you wont be disappointed Glenda.
Big or small fat or thin Tony will help you as long as they have plenty of options ie: Branches and ratio as Pup said.

put both your hands up and say yes it will probly cost less than going to the movies these days work out what tree youd like and put up a wanted ad here im sure one of us would have somthing to send up at a good price
being mackay may be a native or somthing hat can handle the heat and humidity swampy or olive or clerodendrum these are great up there what ever you choose youll enjoy it

I have seen Tony work many times now and he is a don't miss Demonstrator.
We had Tony In Newcastle 2 year a go doing WORKSHOP and Demo as was resently at the Central coast doing the same
I attended a workshop at each which was informative and productive also attend both demos.

Great idea Dayne! Glenda i urge you to take full advantage. Get your self some nice material and start a good tree. I will also go as far as saying, that if you haven't got anything worth while to take, then go as an observer and learn from many trees getting work shopped. Stick around the good ones. JMO
