in nothing more than a blunt experiment i purchased and repotted a nursery Baeckea virgata into a shallow (cut off bottom of a base bucket) pot. This, if i give it adequate after care, should survive.. to help, its been put in a large, slow draining, teracotta tray full of pure 5 mm perlite granuals! drainage and moisture!!!! arrr its all an experiment.... the soil was my own mix!
i will take pics soon... (the trunk and canopy are un-touched) and are quite cool!... im reading about them now. anyone have experience with them?

well anyway, i reckon your baeckea should be good i have discovered that they can take hard root pruning, removed 2/3 of the root ball on mine and its fine. they grow fast aswell so you need to trim em a lot.

They like being in a water tray, most especially in the summer. They tend to shoot back on old wood and make very nice bonsai.

nahh.. When i was repotting it, my lil bro and some mates came over for beers. and.. they scoreddddddd. . . wait for it... A bonus repot and root prune demonstrationnnnnnn!!!!. (they were rolling their eyes too!!) . I had just mixed up my mix and got everything ready, so i wasnt stoping!!! they were surprised to see that roots can be roughed up and reduced by so much! wasnt too rough! but, was probally the quickest root prune iv done. !
its funny, i have many other trees around, at that same early stage, and this one got the 15 mins of fame, a nursery stock baeckea virgata in the bottom of a chopped off base bucket with "extra super fast" drainage holes as standard . PLUS a moisture tray, a good one! heres some pics.. i hope it takes off well it could be nice i think.

Im still deciding how to tackle the top.. has anyone advice?? luke

i think if you judicously prune you will be good with the top, these have naturally contorted trunks, i do like them, every one i had has now passed on but all of them had nice trunks

its first prune!!!!..... now waits for it to bounce back. luke

G,day Luke what are the dimension of the tree? you say mini, but it does look to be at least 25mm high and wide. They are very rewarding trees, and can be made into some thing special.
The one that is now on the far right of the header is one.
It is 33mm high with a similar width. It handles root pruning and foliage pruning without any problems, as always after care is important.
