An enthusiast brought over three Lillypillys: the parent tree that he bought three years ago and two well rooted branches that were successful air layers. He has basically done nothing to the trees other than air layer since he got them and all three have wonderfully twisted growth. The leaves are quite small and pointed, new growth is pink, branching tends to develop very intermingled and contorted.

Does anyone have any info on this particular hybrid lillypilly?? I've worked with quite a few lillypillys over the years and I have never seen growth habits like this tree. No #2 is more than likely going to have the potential apical branch lopped and become a semi cascade. It's a little beauty. Also, he has never sprayed the trees and they don't have a trace of psyllids.

these are nice mela. i havent seen them before like this either, all LP i have seen are fairly straight with only light curves. that first one reminds me some of fly's river red!

Devine!!! I'm watching this space very closely for i want to know more about this variety. i will get onto some nurseries this next week and see what i can fish out. Am googling as we speak!!!

I figure it is something like Fasciation (plant pathology) : Malformation of plant parts resulting from disorganized tissue growth. Propagation will exhibit the malformation. Probably not available from a nursery.

Mel can you find out what colour flower and fruit please ???

Won't know flowers and fruit until it happens. I'll send an email to my source but I am not sure if he will know. If I find out anything more I will add the info.

These nice trees look like Syzygium leuhmanii to me.

Another possability but still cant find any referance to twisting grain.

looks like a leuhmanii to me. mine tend to grow sort of the same

if they get to much shade. cascade leaves are alot broader.

leuhmanni certainly fits the bill for the foliage, weeping and the fact that it is resistant to psyllids. Taking a closer look at Mel's photos, its not really obvious that the grain is twisting. But that is from this side of the fence. What ever the case they are damn fine stock! Now a hunting we shall go! There is also a hybrid called lulu which sounds interesting.
