Hey IS
I have been using crushed terracotta which has some glaze on it. Glaze won't ge a problem what would worry me about roof tiles is if they are made from cement or a clay.
Can you take a picture to help clarify?

i asked the lady and she says its terracotta and since i drove all the way to bonsai environment and all they had left was the small grade of chinese akadama i thought it would do the same being both terracotta

Terracotta will be fine. I have been lucky enough that the local landscapers have crushed terracotta in stock. I did not realise bonsai environment sold it as Chinese Akadama?
