In an earlier thread of mine (viewtopic.php?f=10&t=3209_" ), I was asking for advice regarding defoliating my White Ash. One of the replies from Anttal63 suggested cutting the tree back to the first branch. This is a suggestion I intend to take up.
What I was wondering, however, is rather than simply cutting off at the first branch, could I aerial layer just above where I intend to cut? That way, I would have 2 treees to work with. If the consensus is to aerial layer, should I wait until the tree has lost all its leaves or do it now while there is still new growth appearing on the tree?

Don't knwo qabout ash, but you woud have nothing to lose but some time anyway if you do decide to layer.

I would wait till spring now anyway, as the tree will be slowing down for the winter, and the layer will have more chance to take whin pushing vigourus growth

you definately want to layer when the tree is pushing strong growth, in doing it while it is pushing strong growth the layer will be stronger and take quicker. i dont see why you shouldnt be able to airlayer it and as said above shouldnt have anything to lose except a bit of time
