Casuarina Progress

Gday,
About 8 weeks ago I had to remove a Casuarina which was in our back yard. It was a young tree which was going to take up too much space when it grew, so instead of chopping it down and throwing it out, I decided to put it into a bonsai pot and look after the little guy. As I was in a rush I did not place it in a grow box or leave it in the ground to recover.. I simply trimmed the roots back hard and put it straight into the pot...
After about 8 weeks whilst I was out the back watering my other bonsai I noticed some new growth growing from the Casuarina... after 8 weeks of waiting and checking for any signs of life I was so excited when I saw the bright green foliage emerging, especially after weeks of a nagging fiance who insisted it was dead and to throw it out...
Attached are some photo's.
Can anyone suggest what my next step would be... any ideas. One of the photos is of the top of the trunk where I gave it the chop.. should I neaten this a bit more now?
Any suggestions and criticism welcomed so fire away
