Tridents Galore

These are some of the 2000 plus Trident Maple seedlings that were sown in Spring '09 .Approx' 1000 of them have been twisted , plaited , braided and wrapped together in bunches to fuse together and produce some awesome trunks . Currently fusing together nicely , another 100 or more have been wired to improve the movement and use in other styles . Some tend to be dragging their heels but on average they are around 300-450mm high

nice alpine!

that middle picture, i think you will need to add more trees in between the seedlings for it to fuse nicely, i think if it has that much of a gap between them it wont work to well, it will look like 5-8 trunks stuck together, i can see where you are going with it though, you have enough seedlings there to use a frame like dugsbonsai.com and create a sumo like trident, i find the technique amazing!

Hi Jamie i could only use the trunks close enough together to start the frame work , about 50-100 of these are bigger , better bases , but yes they will require some trunk splicing with other seedlings . Cheers

Working my way through a sea of Tridents .

These will eventually be combined into a raft type group plantings .
100_5311.jpg
All these seedlings were purpose bent in the growing bed for this very task .
100_5314.jpg
.After they are potted up a quick wire job will be done and the trainers will be on their way to a new beginning .Come Spring they will go back into the ground for a season of power feeding .Cheers

Ripped into another one , similar to the blog demo that everyone stumbles across on google . I did say similar .
100_5328.jpg
I used an upside down plastic pot and lashed the base of the trunks together with twist ties .Never again , i know i will use a staple gun to take care of the business of holding the trunks in order.. KISS "keep it simple stupid" .Whilst it didn't take 9 hours to complete i didn't lash the entire trunk only the base in 2-3 places
100_5330.jpg
, then spiraled the seedlings together .For now they will remain wrapped as per pics
100_5339.jpg
then pre spring the wire will be removed and several tops will be removed to enhance the taper .Cheers

Looks good.
How long will it take for them to fuse together?

Hi Criag , tridents seem to fuse together in a matter of months during the growing season if strapped tight enough , i expect this thick trunk to completely fuse by next winter . The more i look at this one , the more i want to layer the top off after it fuses together .Just another challenge.Cheers
