Bonsai in Spain, mainly on the Plains?

Hey All,

Have a friend in Madrid, who is looking to get into bonsai ... he's asked what's some good beginner material to get, I would have suggested figs and Aussie natives, as that's my go to answer, though not sure it's so suited. Anyone have any recommendations?

I've suggested he look at some collections and possibly join a local club.

Similar climate to Melbourne. Tridents and Chinese Elms are tough, if he likes deciduous trees. Olives are tough and possibly yamadori-able in Spain. ? Sabina junipers are native to Spain.

We had an Aussie expat in Spain posting here for a few years.
Try searching for posts by Starfox. He was growing a number of Aussie species over there. Maybe even PM to see if he's still growing bonsai and where.
I think they may have moved to France?
Last post was January this year.
