Hi there Guys,
Some Junipers possess 2 types of foliage...Scale Foliage and Needle Foliage. I have a Juniper which, previous to a very heavy prune, showed scale foliage. But all of it's new foliage is the needle type.
I'm just wondering if the foliage types are determined by water, fertilizer, soil type??

needles is the juvanile folige and when matures can get scaley. some varieties will grow juvanile needles when traumatised or stressed.

thats true some will go to the mature foliage when stressed or traumatised. some junipers will also just have needle foliage there whole lives.
what spp is the juniper in question webos? if it is squamata you will find juvenielle foliage will be needle then you will get soft scale like foliage for an example.

Webos one of the junipers that do this more than others is sold under a few different names!!!.
Juniperus feomina ( common name American juniper ).That is the one the late great John.Y. Naka used for his Goshin groups both of them.
This same plant is also sold as Juniperus sinensis Japonica!! now that one is confusing.
Yet another name is Juniperus sinensis aurea. All three have foliage that has both on the tree at the same time. I have a group that has the main trees with mature foliage and the lesser trees with immature foliage.
I also have a single tree that is not stressed that has Juvenile foliage all over.
Shimpaku will show juvenile foliage after pruning as in thinning out or heavy cut back.I have never had this happen on Squamata or Procumbens.
I have noticed with more sun and ( funny this ) less fertilising, the foliage turns to mature quicker. I had a large single trunk tree that I was made an offer I could not refuse so it was moved on. Sadly it is now defunct. Pre digi days but I do have some film shots that if you are interested enough I will dig out, and copy.
Cheers
