i have what i think is a 'Acer palmatum Suminagashi'. Its not in good condition as can be seen in the following pics. can anyone help?

Pretty sure its simply the heat in the wind....
that i cant solve, but mask. poor lil burgz!

What position is it kept?
Do you water it everyday?
Is the soil mix free draining?

Hi Elias,
Not a serious problem, just a little burnt if you can, move it to a more sheltered position when hot or windy weather is expected.
If you defoliate you should get a new flush of leaves (but I would not for this tree as it is still at the growing-on stage). New leaves would be more attractive and more delicate but would slow the development of the tree.

This tree is kept next to the hot water system on the side of our house, it receives direct morning sun for around 3-4 hours, daily watering, we do get hot winds!! but it is in a fairly sheltered position. wondering if i shouldn't ground plant it in the backyard, its a twig.

Yes, i would plant it, with a tile. Heres what you do, dig the hole the same depth of the soil in the pot. Place a tile in the bottom of the hole, then sit the tree over the centre of the tile and fill it in . The tile stops the roots going down. Cause its summer, i would not disturb the roots, otherwise i would spread out the roots with its soil attached so it sits flatter on the tile. To do that now, it would stress the tree. If there is plenty of rain for a few days, then i would. This tree could be planted between other trees in the garden, because it would be there only for a few years before lifting. Whilst being in the ground for fattening up the trunk, it allows you to also start training the trunk and branches. I do this only when the tree has taken root in the ground. Branches can be pinched back and tweaked. Im in the process of doing same with a 3 year old tree that has self sown. Hope this helps mate. Look forwards to its progress in the future. cheers!

I would not Plant it out till winter as to do as Petra says you will have to disturb the roots. Not the thing to do to a Maple this time of year
I think too is leafburn. Do not worry too much if you cannot avoid it as if the tree is healthy you can defoliate near the end of summer, and get a new flush of leaves for autumn that are not damaged.

You can make a shade house with shade cloth to cut both wind and sun id ggod. the water heater may dry the immediate area and cause it too
Do you have a tree in the garden you can place it under or near?

thanks for the feedback guys, theres no chance of me re planting it just yet, will be great to see new growth.... looks like its been to battle at the moment.

Ideas great mate! iv been thinking about a shade housing for another area of the yard. As to the hot water system drying out the area, its possible, but i keep it well watered there and the golden kane palm hosts some nice shade, its pretty lush there actually.
