Little John air layer q

Morning folks!

On the weekend I helped a friend move house. He has an old Little John on his front yard he’s thinking of pruning back pretty heavily. Some of the branches are a good 2 inch in diameter l. I was vaguely thinking of asking if I could grab some air layers off it before he did so. So the q I have to the group is - how large a branch should I go for to successfully air layer from a little John?

Thanks,

Jas

2 inches shouldn’t be a problem, I would attempt that on a Little John for sure. If you have plenty of options try a few different sizes, just make sure you leave lots of “green” above each and that the sites you choose to layer have interesting lines when removed.
Good luck with them!

Agree. Should air layer reasonably easily.
I hope your friend is not in a hurry to prune? Getting good roots could take the rest of summer - say 3-4 months?
