Just read Grant Bowie's post about peppercorns.. Someone there says they would still dig Olives. My last big olive was dug a year ago in Nov. Had a massive bulb on the bottom (about the size of an LP record). For 8 months it had not a leaf or shoot, then in spring it shot like crazy. I then decided to reduce the bulb so I cut it off flat...roots and all and re-planted it. I've done this before with a smaller one and the tree showed not a sign of ill-health.

My question is, has anyone out there done the flat bottom chop on an olive out in the field? has it worked? It would save a lot of the hard work since you dont have to dig and chop through big roots....just chop the tree off at the base and head home to plant it.

i am pretty sure that is how dug of dugzbonsai.com does it straight away from being dug, cuts them flat then goes from there it should work because the bulb you talk of is actually a tuber which is a massive store of energy for the tree, from what i have learnt anyways

that will make collecting olives easier, as sometimes they send down that big tap root , on the ones I have dug from my parents house, I left the roots intact growing out from the sides but cut straight off the bottom tap root, they lost some leaves but after 4-5 weeks now they are sending out new shoots and new leaves every where

I saw a post from a South Australian on another site called the Chain saw massacre. I think he might have called it Texas, it might have been on the now defunct Bonsai Talk.
He showed pictures of where he cleared the soil away from the base, mainly to save his chain saw blades and just cut though the base flair was always there.

I wish I could remember more, but they were just ginormous cuttings, and always successful. The person might even be a member here now.

I might do some wandering on Christmas day down to the Olive weed patch and do some cuttin'!!!

Hi guys, this is actually my first post here, will do an introduction soon I promise.
As far as Olives go, I have never "dug" one out of the ground. Far to much wasted energy.
My method is to cut the tree back to a bare trunk, lopping the top off at a selected height where the taper ends and then scrape the soil/rubbish away from the base of my selected tree. I then give the tree two or three wacks with a matic to break any and all roots and break the tree out of the ground. If the selected stump has a very large trunk/ lignotuber then I will cut through the "bulb" at its thickest part with a saw, just to make it a bit lighter to carry home. If the tree is light enough to carry with ease then I leave this cutting 'till I get home where I can use a chainsaw. I don't like using chainsaws in public parks, which is where all my SA Olives came from. (With permission to dig of course)
By the way, I have left Olives up to a month between "digging" and planting and can't remember loosing one yet.

all this new info has inspired me to collect a few olive that I thought had huge potential but I thought it would be to hard to dig them
