Is there a technique for reducing the length of stem on ginko leaves-- is defoliation dangerous for these?

I have defoliated ginkgo once but the leaves grew back similar to before so I have not tried again.

Cant say i've ever bothered defoliating Ginkgo, but i do remove the leaves that grow excessively large as there can be a range of different sizes on the one tree, as well as any leaves that grow vertically upward/ thin out the whorled shoots to allow better light penetration.

I defoliate my ginkgo every year but the new leafs are not a lot smaller though I get some new buds which is a bonus.
I tend to get new shoots coming from the root or the base of the plant resulting in a clump style bonsai.
I started removing new shoots coming from the root but leave those from the base and lower in the tree.
I am thinking of defoliating twice this year.
