As promised a few photos from the exhibition. This is the 31st exhibition conducted by the local bonsai people and I think its a jolly good effort, 31 in a row.

Here is another innovative display idea, it gives people the opportunity to see shohin at eye level.

The GBS encourages people of all levels of bonsai to participate and display their trees.

That was my favourite tree from the pictures that (Keels not Watto) posted yesterday. Also - interesting idea about having Shohin at eye level - I reckon that could work. I say that because some of my forests are Shohin height - but in larger rectangular pots because of the spread of trees. I think they generally look better at eye level. That said, that generally means I view them sitting down because it isa bit hard to have larger pots displayed at 5-6' height. I guess at a show - that means I would request my bonsai to be opposite a resting seat .... and as people take a break they can look across at the forest and maybe drift off on a little imaginary walk.

Having seating is a good idea Mark, although the Covert rules prevented that this year.

That triple trunk maple with the spring leaves kicking in is absolute magic...
... just thinking about the exhibition as a whole (since you have me thinking about it from your other thread Watto). I really like the dark grey backdrop behind the trees. Hopefully it is just as effective in real life because in a photographic sense I think it really helps to show the trees at their full potential. Looks like a great show! Many thanks for all the effort with the photos.

Thanks for your thoughts R3. I think the darker backgrounds together with some natural light make the trees "pop" and that is a good thing. I say that because our group had white for many years and the trees seem to be absorbed into the background. Changing things is always expensive but probably worth it in my opinion.
It is time for our group to change probably but that will be up to the executive to make those decisions however for a small poor group those are big decisions.

That Scott’s Pine bunjin is just something about the branch placement and definition in how even the needle length is puts me in mind of a ukiyo-e block print tree. Idealised nature, really nicely executed in this front.

I don’t make much secret of my preference for deciduous but I could stare at that pine for hours just admiring the form of this tree in this moment.

Good choice on the black background; I’m using white walls at home but they somehow desaturate the trees I find, where the black allows the tree to show its full potential.

The six or seven members who put on the exhibition will be very pleased with the well thought out and constructive comments made and I will thank you on their behalf and pass on the comments of course.

What a fantastic exhibition from only six or seven members! Congratulations to everyone, a fine effort! It really makes a difference to see the effort that's gone into the entire display, and how good to see so many hand made pots too! You should all be very proud!

Great show ! I admire the variety in the trees as well as in the displays. Loved the bottlebrush group - so original !

I agree Lisa, and all in hand made Australian pots. Until Mel mentioned it I didn't realise how many Australian pots were in use but that all goes well for the Aussie potters, or maybe its how kind our group is to Aussie potters!!!!
