Trunk chop English oak

My English oak needs to be cut back. It’s been in the same pot for a couple of years now and I’m pretty sure it was an air layer when I purchased it. My question is, is it better to cut back hard now while dormant so the tree doesn’t waste energy on the top buds only firms to chop them off or wait until its leafed put or extending? I’d like to put it in the ground this year as well.... thanks in advance!

I would cut it back now pointless wasting time n energy for buds to open, and then cut them off.

Making the cut now means the tree will have longer growing season time to recover and strengthen before next winters dormancy. I find when buds are swelling and its evident that new growth is about to open out is the best time to cut back. This way any remaining buds get all the energy to grow.

Ahhh... didnt realise it was a trunk chop you were doing. My previous thoughts still apply though.

Trunk chopped... only one third of the trunk is alive. Gees, no wonder it wasn’t doing much. Hope it lives.
