Golden Deodar

I've been lurkung around here for 4 or 5 years, started my bonsai adventures with a couple of purchased trees about 16 months ago.

I've just started my first project taking raw nursery stock and developing it into a bonsai. It's rewarding seeing your vision take shape from raw stock rather than taking over a styled tree, and I thought I'd start a thread here to keep a record of it and join in more with this community :)

I'd been cruising around the nurseries, and a group of gold deodars caught my eye. The nursery had several different cultivars. This particular one had lost its label and was re-tagged just as "Gold cedrus deodar". Some of the others were Cream Puff and Vinks Gold.

This is the one I selected:

The foliage attracted me: nearly white when young, darkening through the season

I contempmated the tree on and off for a few weeks - which branches to use, it's best angle

Initial trim and wire today

I'll have to do a bit more to the top. I was unsure whether to work with what was there, or leave it for now until after spring and see what new growth I get.

Lovely colour foliage ,and has a nice trunk line.
the shape looks good. :tu2: I am pretty sure my first nursery stock was a Deodar as well ,the thing I remember most was they took a long ,long time for the branches to set after wiring. Good Luck . Cheers John.

Thanks John :)
I've heard they can take a while to set. The thinnest branches were pretty flexible, so I imagine it's true. As it starts to grow I'll find out!

Awesome foliage colour!
May be worth investing in some annealed copper wire if you want the branches to set with less flex back. It is stronger and holds its shape alot better than aluminium wire, but is also much more expensive.

Cheers,
Pearcy.

I agree - I already have an order on the way from Badger wire :)
I was hoping it would have arrived by now, but there's been some freight delays of late. I really needed to get it done this weekend because I've got some busy weeks coming up at work, so I went ahead with the aluminium.
