I bought a ginkgo a few years ago from ray nesci. Tried to call today but no answer.
Does he grow them from a cutting of a male tree or does he grow from seed? I want to know if I have a male or if its a roll of the dice (seed grown)

Why? does it matter for bonsai. I have numerous seed-grown fora potential forest planting but your question raises doubts whether I should have just air layered.

Alledgedly ginkgo can be determined from their leaf; I think the female has a more deeply indented than the male(so you need to compare or guess). However seed grown leaf form can vary a lot so it’s still uncertain. Surest way is to ask Ray but Clinton would be just as likely to know.
If when you next repot the tree (and it is not too rootbound )you may be able to see if it is a cutting or not. Seed grown Nebari and cutting grown nebari are quite obvious for many, many, many years.

As I understand it it is almost impossible to identify gender in Ginkgo visually without the fruit. Leaf shape is quite variable ranging from entire to deeply lobed, even on an individual tree.
