Thought I'd start a thread on this (possibly slightly over) Shohin sized Shimpaku Juniper. Like a few of my trees at the moment, I'm planning on potting up soon. Im not worried if it is slightly over Shohin, I've never actually measured the trees height before.

I forgot to take an original stock photo of this one (something i seem to be good at forgetting lately). I took this and another two Shimpaku to a workshop with Bjorn Borholm last year when he was down for the AABC/Bonsai Northwest 2018 Convention.



Unfortunately this is the only raw photo I have of it - on the left. I didnt have time to finish the tree with Bjorn as it was the last of the three I worked on with him. I managed to get it done at home.



Before Bjorn flew back to the States we threw a farewell BBQ after the convention, where I got him to give it a quick look over to get his tick of approval. Here is the initial styling as at July 2018.



This tree responded well to the work and threw on some healthy growth. I had to give it a good thinning out, removing maybe 40% the foliage in February 2019. Photo attached below. I'll keep it thinned in the apex to try direct growth to the lower foliage. I want to extend the low blanch (secondary trunk) further out and get it more dense over time.

I like it. Its got good movement, and movement low down which I think is important.

Nice looking Tree Pearcy, great movement especially like the branches on the secondary trunk and how they snake downwards .Very cool.
What are the plans for the apex ?

Very nice. I agree with Watto, lots of fantastic movement in this tree, both in the trunk and the main lower branch. Look forward to seeing it potted up! Excellent stuff...

Thanks all for the nice comments and sorry boom I didn't see your post about the apex. To be honest I'm still fairly new to Shimpaku (and bonsai in general haha). I'll try keep it thinned and remove some branching as other present themselves. If you have any advice for the apex it would be appreciated.

Re the pot selection questions, I have purchased this one that I think will match quite well, it's a beautiful unglazed mokko shaped pot by Reihou. Now to wait for spring to get it into it's nice new apartment.

Nice house, I'm looking forward to the next installment.

With a growing family I finally got a little time to give this neglected shimpaku some love. It had put on enough growth that I could replace the apex branch from the lower right canopy - was previously coming from half way up the trunk.

Still a while to go for this one yet but on the right direction I think. I'll keep the triple apex at the minute but may look at reducing the overall foliage mass in the future. Will also reassess where I can get a sacrifice branch on the trunk for this one but not essential.

Next step, Shari twisting round that trunk in an attempt to induce forther movement - this is partly why I think a sacrifice branch will assist as it will cause the live tissue to heal and thicken around the shari. may also end up tilting the tree a little further over to the left.

Looking good Pearcy.
Just one thought. It looks a bit straight and heavy at the yellow arrow. You might consider making a new apex with the white arrow branch at some point in the future?
