My second entry is this Sticky Wattle

Description: Acacia howittii, commonly known as sticky wattle or Howitt's wattle, is a tree species that is endemic to Victoria, Australia. It has an erect or spreading habit, growing up to 9 metres high, The phyllodes are up to 2 cm in length.

Purchased from Padre Pios Bonsai Nursery, he said was $25 but sold it to me for $20
Decided to give this species a go as I am a little more familiar with it's growth habits being one of the first native species I experimented with last year - from what I remember I did not purchase my first one for $20 but prices at Padres are very unpredictable. At times you can score an awesome deal and other times may be a little overpriced.
Still uncertain on what style but will consider a few options.

I don't have one but I do like this species for bonsai ... always an interesting tree with the way the foliage/branches grow.
Watch out for that starweed ground cover - get rid of it ASAP (particularly as it looks to be flowering) or you'll spend your life removing it from every tree near this one, it's a menace!

I'll be sure to put her in quarantine as soon as I am home

I may also have this starweed around my Gingko tree, even after repotting and taking out all weeds it's come back with vengeance

I like what you are doing to encourage a nice spread of the surface roots/nebari.

Indeed, even though I have not yet entered them in the competition - I think you are preparing better than two potential entries that I repotted - see towards the base of page 3 on this thread here viewtopic.php?f=36&t=26357&start=30

I cut 65-70% of the root mass off and then teased and spread the roots prior to repotting but did not have the knackers to go harder ... certainly not to bare root and spread like you have done.

Interestingly, my acacia/sticky wattles have not missed a beat - so perhaps I should have gone harder. Same goes for some recently repotted River Gums and Swamp Paperbarks. Perhaps I should have gone harder on all?

Not looking so good over the last month, not to mention this heat wave. It sits in tray of water, tho I’m thinking pot might be too big. Did scratch test along with some green foliage and there is still a few signs of life. Fingers crossed.

Don’t think this one made it through folks.
When I slip pot the tree there were barely any roots, or a so called root ball, from what I remember it had a few longer roots which I cut back but probably should have left alone.
Live and learn.
