The prices are right and they (sometimes) look Ok but I'm getting very fed up with these poor quality pots.
This may not be a problem in warmer areas but last winter I had a few shatter in the frost. This year quite a few have delaminated round the rims.

Every time I look there's another one cracking up

Certainly not value for money when they crack up or split apart each winter
Time to start looking for some better quality suppliers.

Shibui,
when choosing, simply put some spittle or water on the bottom of the pot.
Porous sucks in the moisture.
Then look for the stoneware.
We use those porous pots for growing Chinese Serissas and J.P.black pines.
Helps keep the extra water from rain becoming a problem.
Until.

* It was not a problem in the older days, as you separated pot from plant for
winter and stuck the plant in the earth with a healthy layer of leaf mold to
protect the tree.

That's very disappointing, Neil, I can understand your frustration!
Good tip there Tambrand, will keep it in mind.

Neil,
Lost 5 this year - I believe they considered minus 7 a bit bracing - trust PK brings some to the show
