Walter Pall has published an article showing how he root pruned and repotted his massive Japanese Maple in Summer!

Crumbs :o You know it's a proper size tree when you are using an electric saw to trim the roots!

Mark - re: your Japanese Maples.... what Did crocodile Dundee say?

"That's not a tree... THIS is a tree!" :tu2:

I'm shaking my head at the lack of care taken for such a stunning tree. I'd have given it a bit more attention to detail, and some pride in my work. :lost:

another good point. I guess he feels confident enough of his abilities to be so blase with his trees. I guess when you're so sure of yourself then that's what you do? No pussy footing around with Walter.

Still, I think it's good to see differing techniques. I saw a fascinating demo at BIMER last month, where they had four demonstrators up front at the one time, all four doing repotting their way. All four using different mixes, techniques, and trees. All four with many years of experience, and fabulous trees. Was a perfect example of how one set technique isn't necessarily the right one.

Thanks for that mel. Yes, it turned out to be a good education session at Bimer.

The tree did not even blink. See it three months later. Another bonsai myth uncovered.

Hello Walter - good to alternative techniques applied. You mentioned in your thread of heavy fertilizer after repotting...do you use liquid or slow release type and what was your suggested NPK ratio?

Thanks for sharing, Walter! I'm always looking for variances. :)

In my sub tropical climate we are able to break quite a few of the myths with our repotting times, lovely to see your tree being added to those possibilities.
