Small trees circa 1975.jpg
Hi everyone,

Here are two very small bonsai of mine from about 1975. Color photography hadn't been invented yet.
Both are the same type of tree and they were only about 1 1/2 inches high, about 32mm (not including pot).

Who can tell what they are? Two or three could fit in my hand.

One guess per customer only.

It looks like Acer rubrum (red colour leave) and that my best guess.

CORRECT! Started as seedlings and kept them for about 20 years although they got up to about 6 inches or 150mm.

There were about 5 of them

YAY!!! I love liquidambers! Frank Condello from Yatte Yattah has a few really big ones that are about 40 years old! AMAZING plants!

thats a good point grant, how did you go about reducing the foliage to bring them in to perspective with the tree only being 3cm high?

Nothing, just stuck them in a small pot and repotted most years for health. I don't think I had heard of defoliation back then.

Maybe I should start again?

Eventually when they got a bit bigger I did defoliate but with Liquidambers you have to do them by mid December or they came back only hit and miss.
