G'day,

Looking for opinions on what to do with this Buxus dug 12 months ago, it has only thrown shoots on one side of the tree.

It is a big one around 15cm at the base, has some natural shari but from other angles also has some horrible reverse taper.

I've been advised to cut it back hard again to try and stimulate more back budding all over however, my original plan after only growing on one side was to go for a tortured look and try and shape a canopy on one side with the deadwood a massive feature along the other.

Thoughts, input and virts please?

I was thinking something along these lines with a little more negative space.

Perhaps add some tilt that way and go for a more windswept effect.
The blank "wind" affected trunk is likely to suit this style I'd say.

Could be a very interesting tree but hard to tell what to do with these pics as you can't see the way the branches emerge from the trunk etc. Either way, the most important thing is to get the foliage back as close to the trunk as possible. No need to rush to style it too much at the moment.

I tried to get my camera in there but there are about six thick straight branches all coming out at that side.

I'll give it a trim over the weekend and try and get some better pics with less foliage on it.

This species does bud back on old wood but are you sure you want it too? I would recommend to trim it back quite hard so you can better appreciate the structure and devise a plan from there. At the moment it looks like a shrub and you need to make it look like a tree. Generally I think too wide and too tall.
I have a couple of these are they are good bonsai subjects so in a few years it will look quite good.

I like your Idea so far but I agree that a little tilt will add interest. I also see a smaller, more powerful tree (i.e. lower the canopy and bring the edge of the silhouette closer to the trunk).

Nice stock to start with.
