Hi Ben Thomas , you certainly can layer them , my Crepe myrtle had multi layers set simultaneously and all survived .

The old wives tale concerning Crepe Myrtle.

cut a branch off an throw it into the air as high as you can.
It will come back down with roots on it as they are that fast

Easy peasy to airlayer or grow from cuttings
