shohin repotting 2017

Finally had a day to myself after 2 overseas trips and a hectic two businesses im running atm. Was a balmy 8 degrees all day at my place on sunday so under the outdoor entertainment area with the fireplace blazing I got stuck into a few shohin . Hopefully ill get a day the next few weekends to get everything done. All these are under 20cm tall and the smallest is about 10 cm . some are airlayed material , others have been cut down and built up. I really like chinese elm for shohin. Easily grown, branch well, ramify well and airlayer easy.

Hi Matt,
Having visited your place I know what a nice work and display area you have.
By the way, Leigh has called for more loans of Shohin size material as some long term ones we had returned to their owner this year. Yours look great.

AIRLAYED LITTLE BROOM ELM . THIS ELM GETS QUITE A DEEP RED COLOR IN AUTUMN ON THE MAJORITY OF FOLIAGE AND RETAINS IT FOR A FEW MONTHS .GOT IT YEARS AGO OFF A MEMBER HERE

Hi Grant hope you are feeling better. Yes the undercover area came in nicely out of the cold. We were fortunite to have over 70mm since last Monday so it has been a godsend considering we just went through our driest June on record. Leigh is welcome to drop through anytime. I have a shohin seji elm that im repotting this weekend. This little tree really has been a joy to work on and its rewarded me with its progress .

Wow, nice trees! I started repotting this weekend too, wondered if I was jumping the gun! Brisbane doesn't really get a winter...

Hi Matt,
Just wondering looking at your mix. Do you use the same mix for your larger trees? Or is this a more organic mix to hold water longer? Nice trees mate, did you need to defoloate any? Nearly all of mine are holding their leaves in Melbourne.

I use the same mix I just sieve the smaller particles out for larger trees . Ihave used this mix for pines, junipers , figs, and all my deciduous and flowering trees. Summers here can be quite hot with multiple 40 degree days so I like something that will retain a bit more moisture . we had our wettest winter for some years last year and I didn't see any trees suffer sitting in wet mix . No need to defoliate a few -6 and one minus 7.8 did it for me. My junipers this year have gone quite a brown color from the cold.

I am a long admirer of your collection. They have progressed so much over time through your doing and some of your trees are outstanding mate and will only even better with time.

Thanks so much for your kind words
I think your collection really is high quality and your photography skills one can only hope to aquire. Even though I seem to have less time for bonsai these days I always enjoy repotting time and seeing what progress has been made. I have several tridents in pots and styros going into a bonsai pot this year . One in particular I have high hopes for in a few years (its larger than shohin though at around 40cm ). Thanks again.
Yes I forgot to get a pic of it in its pot. I also agree that pot is just a thing of beauty.

Is that yellow stuff in the trees lichen? And if it is how do you get it on the tree and does it nit damage the bark? I know too many questions but those trees look awesome

Hi Mathew , mate there is some serious work gone into these tree , very inspirational
. I don't think I have a single shohin here at all , if I have I wouldn't be able to see it .

Yes lichen that particular one grows like a weed around my area and place. Guess the conditions must be favourable for it. Yes it can damage the bark in large amounts so I am mindfull of it on my pines etc . I usually just spray or paint a weak lime sulfer solutuion on the trees effected. Shibui might chime in and know the lichen species.
