I'd love to see photos of Tridents from those living in Brisbane or QLD in general. This autumn/winter is my first with a Trident Maple & I'd love some tips for our climate.

I think mine needs more sun, it's spent it's life in side my shade house. Also, do these leaves look ok?

Hi Kane,
I'm on the Gold Coast. On Australia Day

I bought a fairly advanced Tri Maple from Red Dragon Bonsai Nursery at Currumbin, which had been grown and roughly pruned to promote ramification. I pruned it severely and wired it and it's now looking nice, showing promise. I haven't fertilized it much, but come spring I'll try to push it along to bring out more foliage. I don't have a very recent photo, but these will give you an idea. So far it's had no trouble thriving in our climate here in S.E. Qld.

but I haven't had it for a winter yet.
Cheers,
Frank

Kane. The leaves are OK. It has probably been a bit dry a couple of times which can cause the brown edges. The tree can cope with a few browning leaves but, as you get better at looking after it you should see less of that.

All the tridents I have in bonsai pots show dead edges on some or all of the leaves. Most of the tridents I have in deeper nursery pots or bags look much better. It's my first Winter with them too, so we'll see whether they colour up or not.
Steve and Dianne manage to keep them growing well at Park Ridge, I can't see why they shouldn't do well here.

Hi Mel.
Yes, that does make sense.
I did notice that Steven & Diane have moved most of their Maples to a cooler area, or maybe an area which gets less water?

Hi Shibui
Thats for that, could this also be due to a lack of feed? I've not been feeding this tree much & I was going to pick that up - best to wait until spring though, yes?

Yeah, you said. Looks good this little one. I saw a few small ones (smaller then yours even) at a Nursery on the north west yesterday - all leaves had changed.

Next time you're there, you should ask why.
