It seems now is the time to collect fresh seed from Maple trees, but im not sure if there are many planted in community areas.
Any suggestions from locals?

There's a Trident Maple in the Hemiji gardens in the South Parklands that produces a lot of seeds. There's some Japanese maples in there too but I haven't seen them seed. Up Stirling way you can usually spot them in peoples gardens and I think some street trees too.
Good luck and let me know what you find.
Matt.

My maples are still not properly ripe over here yet. The seeds are probably mature enough to be viable but I prefer to let them fully ripen before collecting. Seeds are usually ready around the same time as the leaves fall.

Go to the Mount Lofty Botanical Gardens they have a large collection of maples that go to seed. Not sure about the timing though but Adelaide being a small place you could easily do a couple of trips.

Those seeds look like they should be mature enough to germinate.
I normally sow maple seed soon after collection. It will sit in the soil over winter and germinate as soon as conditions are right in spring. Don't try to keep them warm. Let the seed go through a natural cycle of cool winter. I do not stratify maple seed over here, fresh seed seems to germinate better without cold treatment but my winter is cool anyway so maybe my seeds get natural stratification in the seed trays.
I believe that maple seed that has been dried and stored will go into deep dormancy which can be difficult to break so fewer seeds will grow if they've been stored for some time.
