My friend redesigned her garden and was going to throw out these two gardenia that would not grow. I grabbed them and threw them in a pot and have neglected them for three years. They are still in their original soil so I have a couple of questions.
1. Do you think they are suitable stock for bonsai???
2. Can I repot now?
3. Any care tips most welcome.

I think they look like good stock, they grow pretty easily. I'm not sure how much leaf reduction you can get, but mine isn't anywhere near that stage yet. They get chlorosis pretty easily in pots but it doesn't seem to affect the tree growth. Yours have fantastic trunks with some dead wood which is interesting, I'd give them a crack whether they're "suitable for bonsai" or not.
