I bought this maple about three months back for the interesting trunk. It was in very poor condition; badly potbound, underfed and thirsty. I slip potted it straight away, teasing out the rootball to help it find its way around the bigger pot, and lavished attention upon it in the form of Seasol, Osmacote and Powerfeed. All summer, it has done absolutely nothing. No sign of growth whatsoever. Whilst not actually getting any worse, the leaves have remained dark, brittle and lacklustre.
I was resigning myself to writing it off, but this morning it did this! Trees, eh?
Gotta love 'em!

I've had a couple of these for a few years TT. Mine flower and produce copious seeds even when small in a pot which could be a lovely feature on a bonsai but I have found they don't ramify very well and seem to grow quite slowly here.
Give me a standard trident any day.

Yeah, they have their issues, but I have a real soft spot for those fat, frog-foot shaped leaves!
My plan is to use it in a forest planting with this clump And another, larger specimen.
I feel that in a group planting the ramification problems will be less of an issue.
