Jin Pliers to apply wire
Hello Bonsai Fellows!
I'm once again seeking your advice, I'm wondering if I should be buying a jin plier to apply wire on my trees?
I know that the tool can be used to create jin and deadwood but I don't think i'm at that point of interest yet...
Is it worthwhile? is it a tool that is needed to do a proper job or not really?
Thanks any feedback is welcome!

Pureheart
I've never owned a pair of Jin pliers.
I just use these and they seem to do a pretty good job! I'd imagine a little bit cheaper too

Jin Pliers to apply wire
Thanks Theo! I won't buy then... are pliers required for winding wire in your experience?

You only tend to use them if you are using really heavy gauge wire to bend quite large branches.
In my experience, for general wiring, your fingers do a much better job as you can feel what you are doing a whole lot better! Less chance of breaking things imo!

Re: Jin Pliers to apply wire
While not required, I do find them used a lot. Twitches, bending the tail ends of wire and general bending in hard to reach places makes them a useful tool.

Jin pliers. Normal pliers while similar are no where near as good as the real deal.

In my daily use tool roll I have 3 sets of pliers. I use them a lot but I guess it will come down to your personal work style. You can get away with minimal tools but I personally include pliers into my base tool set.

This makes perfect sense.Jow wrote:In my daily use tool roll I have 3 sets of pliers.
Professional tradespeople will generally always have the exact tool for the required procedure.
Not too often will you see a carpenter use a mallet, a mechanic use a shifter, a doctor use a knife....
Certainly, if you want to be a professional with your hobbies, as i like to do too, then buy the right tools for the right procedures. This also can be very expensive so as i also do is calculate my skill levels, amount of use, costs, benefits over substitutes, etc.

Re: Jin Pliers to apply wire
Whilst i don't own a pair, (on my wish list, just not at the top of the list) the main difference i can see is that the head is angled which is probably more comfortable to use. Also the edges to the nose are a little rounded which i can only presume reduces the risk of accidental bark damage.

Re: Jin Pliers to apply wire
I think the leverage on jin pliers is more powerful than on ordinary pliers, so the grip may be stronger. That said, try the cheap option first.

Re: Jin Pliers to apply wire
I like to compare Bonsai tools to Golf Clubs.
When you start off learning Golf, you usually start with a 5 wood, 3 iron, 5 iron, 7 iron, 9 iron and a putter. With the basic set you learn to adapt and create shots with what you have. Then once your skill improves, you seek out the club that you need for your game and this often leads to getting a full set.
Bonsai is no different, purchase tools that you feel you need to start off, perhaps get some cheaper alternative to the 'real mccoy', then once your skill improves, go out and get the tools.
Hope that helps.
Cheers
David
p.s it still amazes me that people will flinch to spend over a 100 dollars on a putter, yet they will fork out hundreds for a driver they will only use every so often.
That too applies to Bonsai tools.
