Hi Wal,

Acer Negundo, is so often said to be of no use for bonsai. All too quickly in my opinion. It takes time, patience and vision. What bonsai doesn't?

In my time with the School of Bonsai I have seen several given the elbow. But one guy quietly kept going and when I last saw it looked pretty good. Many questions remain; such as longevity, prone to anything?, such as being potted for it's lifetime! We will never find out if the usual pundits are so dismissive without giving reasons.

I'll try both side s but I'm more on the 'weed' side.
Pros - very hardy (hard to kill); No need to water every day
Cons: compound leaves so hard to promote small leaves; Relatively long internodes so does not ramify particularly well; Plain yellow autumn foliage; Unattractive bark;

Use it to learn skills - watering, pruning than pass it on to some other beginner
