Hi All,

Does anybody know what these little guys are, and if they are harmful to plants?

I found a bunch of them living in the soil of a Potted Bougainvillea of mine...

Thanks in advance, Denis

They look like leaf hoppers to me.

They are Leafhoppers, small sap sucking insects. They usually jump or quickly fly when disturbed. They can weaken plants and produce honeydew, which attracts ants and provides the environment for sooty mould. You can use pyrethrum and confidor.

Appreciate your help guys.

Roger, for treatment would you recommend using both the products you have mentioned above together or will just one or the other do?

Thanks, Denis

The pyrethrum is a contact insecticide and can be used to remove any hoppers you see. Confidor is more a systemic and should kill subsequent visiting insects. I use the two in combination. But you could spray pyrethrum in the morning and confidor later when the plant has dried off. Just my methods, cant guarantee results.
