Hi All,

Recently a gentleman come to my store and asked me to remove a nearly dead Chinese Elm. He said he planted it in the ground... I debated for a bit, thinking an elm could be a nightmare to remove, today I went to the premises to inspect the tree and found out it was a Japanese Maple, so I removed it immediately.
The reason for removing is that most trunks are dead, burnt by last summers heat. One trunk is very doing well, the other seems partly burned.
I still got a bit more to chopping to do, was gonna get the chainsaw out but was too buggered been paving since 9 am then took this guy out at around 5 in the arvo...
Anyways fingers crossed now, hope it will make it :)

Nice score Elias. Unless you are wanting to get the tree healthy and then aerial layer it, i would be taking ants advice.

Id chop it now too, just in case you start getting little buds developing down low on the unnecessary parts. No point wasting the energy.

GREAT SCORE! What are the dimensions of the plant. trunk base e.t.c. because if you need the chainsaw.......
I often find myself driving around the town looking into peoples front yards and looking at plants. There is two maples right now that i am hoping the person puts up a sign
'If you can haul it you can have it'
LOL. In my dreams

Try getting to know a landscape gardener or a builder or two. They tend to rip out trees fairly regularly.

Hi, whilst on the topic of chopping Maples, I have a Japanese maple about 2 meters in height, although the trunk isnt quite as big as this one but still quite good, is now the bset time for me to chop it down to size, and if so what is the best method, i.e. tools to use, angle to cut etc??

Hi Elias , personally i wouldn't reduce any further as Japanese Maples can shock when removed with leaves on even early in the season .Keep as much foliage as possible to repair the root mass .Liquid seasol Powerfeed at 1/2 strength evey 2 weeks for 6-8 weeks .If buds appear low down the trunk just rub them off . A bigger , shallower container would be a better option {wooden box}as the moisture tends to stick close to the trunk in plastic pots . Yamadori maple feeder roots will rot very quick in plastic pots as the heat up considerably even in low temps . Any large severed roots that touch the outside of the pot or close to are stimulated first and you end up with a club rootball then the center rots . Cut the severed roots at a long angle underneath and rub some hormone powder onto the wound. Cheers
