my awesome desert ash i brought not to long ago. have to wait until next year to repot 
I'm curious, why do you haveto wait until next year to repot?

the bloke i brought it off just repotted it a month ago. he is repotting all his large beautiful trees into plastic pots to sell them off cheap! lucky me

Having been repotted recently does not mean it cant be changed 
If you lift it out of the pot the new mix will just fall off the roots and it should be ready to go into a pot if that's what you want. It has not started to grow yet and even if the roots have started to grow this is an ash. It will cope with losing a few fresh root tips.
If the bloke you bought it off has root pruned properly you won't even need to cut any roots but I would not hesitate to cut them back again if needed.
Having it in a plastic pot for a year will allow you to do some more development and training so leaving it in this pot would also be a good option.
