Visited Shibui Bonsai yesterday and bought 4 new additions for the collection.

I'm lucky that it is only 25 minutes away, but as a bonsai enthusiast, I would travel a whole lot further to visit!

The service, knowledge and variety available is great. The prices are very reasonable too!

I purchased 2 shimpaku junipers, one with lots of twists and turns and one for me to twist and turn. And two JBP. Again, one that has had some work and one for me to grow on and learn a few things from.

I must say, the moment I saw the little developing shohin, I feel in love immediately! Lots of reading about JBP ensued!

So if you are in the North East of Victoria, do yourself a favour and get in touch with Shibui. And while you are in Yackandandah, do yourself another favour and visit Gumtree Pies. Best pies I have ever had!

I'm in Melbourne's inner West but do a drive around every 6 months or so to see Neil. Great stock and great knowledge. Although I'm starting to run out of room! But with the prices I find he offers there is always room for one or two more

Did the 7(ish) hour round trip from Melbourne on Monday and I too was not disappointed. Picked up a couple of tridents, a couple of natives and a couple of other odds and ends, very satisfied with the stock on offer and the advice on care and maintenance that flowed freely.
It is a bit of a trip from Melbourne, but I would have no issues doing it again... well worth the effort!
Congrats on your purchases Theo ... look forward to checking out what you do with these guys.

Yeah I would love to visit his nursery one day. Probably more so to meet him though. But for interstate visitors we would make it a driving visit, so we can buy as well as chat.

I picked up a Callistemon Sieberii and a Mel (exact sp. Unknown) but there were also banksia, callitris, I think I saw a few Eucs and I think ficus in the greenhouse?? Can't remember any Leptospermum or Casuarina etc... but I could be wrong. Hopefully Shibui can chime in with a comprehensive list!

Like I said, it's worth a trip if you are contemplating it, both for the trees & a chat!

Natives have been a very small part of the Shibui Bonsai production so demand frequently outstrips supply. I don't like selling stock I'm not familiar with so I've been running trials with quite a few species but have not had the time or space to grow much for sale. I've also been trialling methods for speeding up trunk development with natives but it is still quite a time consuming process to develop trunks of any size. The first small trial batch of field grown natives have long gone and it will take another couple of years for the next lot to grow.
As Ryceman says, there are currently a small selection of callistemons on the sales table. The more advanced banksias have sold well over the past few months so there's only a few of those left. A larger red gum went to Wagga last weekend so there will only be a couple of small eucs now. There should be a few smaller Lily Pilly but they are very slow to grow down here so I doubt that northerners would even give them a second look. I'm sure there is other species out there but I can't think what at the moment and it is too wet (again) to go out and look.
