I have just spent the weekend helping friends move and they were going to leave this maple behind, they said if I could move it I could have it. So after a short wrestle it now has a new home.

I have to agree also. This is a great tree, and should be put in a prominent spot and enjoyed!

It will far and away be better in the garden than as a bonsai.

I think you should give it a run as a large bonsai specimen. Maples make great large bonsai grown like this and there have been a few featured here over the years.

Hi thanks for the replies, I was leaning towards bonsai as I am on a small block and already have two maples one red and one standard Japanese maple that are landscape trees.

Why not a nicely shaped and manicured specimen tree in a nice pot to resemble bonsai styling

I'm in no hurry to do anything major I'm just after ideas, it looks like general consensus is to keep it big.

good idea.. it is a great tree by itself. some real heavy wiring to the tree can make it a beautiful garden tree that will be the prize of your collection.

The Japanese do large trees like this all the time. You cannot walk through Kyoto without spotting large and manicured specimens like this. Just source a nice large pot.

Hi cottie , nothing wrong with 2 man tree's , this is a good candidate for a 1200mm high 2 man tree . I would allow it to grow another season to produce new roots then rip the head off it by 40-50 % . Reduce it further over the next couple of years with a plan to finish the height at around 1 -1.2m , easy does it but do it .
