This tree as well as many others, were generously donated by the family of the late Graham Rowe, to Bonsai North West Inc. earlier this year.

I have not been a member of the club for long, and unfortunately never got the opportunity to meet Graham. I'd like to personally thank his family for giving myself and many other new enthusiast's the opportunity to get our hands on some great stock, in order to help the hobby grow. Hopefully I can make something great from just one of the pieces of stock they have generously supplied to an array of members

My elms are still hanging on in Sydney too - a new flush of leaves on a couple of them!

Mine rarely go deciduous where I am, and doubt they will do so this year.
I will be repotting them all later in the month.

Apart from my air layer, my elm is still green too (in Sydney). I thought bud burst is the ideal time to repot?

G'day all!

Finally got around to doing some root work and initial styling on this one. I was pleasantly greeted by the somewhat even and not overly thick roots. The lowest portion also seemed to have some movement to it so it's a great result

I got to the initial root selection this morning and began cutting away at anything that was either too thick, or in the wrong position. I remover the roots protruding from higher up in order to show some of the lower movement, before pinning the trunk to a piece of plastic (this is the first time I've tried this). The lowest branch was left and a new leader will be thickened and grown on from there unless I can get a preferred bud on the other side.











After planting I remover the knob from the second trunk on the bend and cut above the new leader. Time to see how much this one can develop before the end of the competition.

Hi Pearcy, you should be able to use all the root cutting to start new plants.

Now that's what I call a root prune! Never tried the plastic disc underneath either so I'll be keen to see how that comes out, I like the idea behind it. Is that 100% diatomite you have potted it in??
The extra movement in the trunk below the surface was a bonus... Looking good!

I wouldn't have the guts to root prune that hard!!

But I do have very little experience.

That's taking the bull by the horns!!!
