Species Corokia cotoneaster
Height 280mm
Where from given to me

I was scraping trying to find an eligible third entry, and was dreading the inevitable trip to the big green money eater, when last night fate stepped in, and a generous club member gave me this little gem as a thank you for my previous help.

Hi there,
your plant looks the same as:
Botanical name: Cornoceae Corokia Makrokapa
Common name: Silver gohst or Chatam Island
Korokio
identification: silver green leaves with yellow flowers
I have 4 plants in the garden, 25 mm trunks and often looked at using it for bonsai material, nice small foliage, sweeping trunks
cheers

Sounds about right, I knew them only as NZ wire bush

(Mods can correct title if required), yep they can make quite different & 'architectural' bonsai, I've also seen them styled as more of an informal upright with toparied pads. Hope yours survives transplanting, I've a larger one that I repotted a couple of months ago (after 4 years in the same pot

) it needed lots of roots removed, and substantial pruning up top, but now its really struggling (lost most of its leaves) ... any tips BoNZia?
Cheers, Ryan

Hi Ryan,
It's is Corokia cotoneaster.
Family: Cornaceae; Genus: Corokia; Species: cotoneaster
Corokia macrocarpa occurs naturally only on the Chatham Islands.
Family: Cornaceae; Genus: Corokia; Species:macrocarpa
Corokia cotoneaster is the one that is commercially grown.
It's a great plant to work with and doesn't need any or very little wire. The trunks don't thicken up that quick though.
Cheers,
Chris

I haven't had any problems transplanting, mind you I have always slipped them from one pot to a bigger one and then in the open ground. Now they have thickened up I want them back in a pot and will do so at the end of the winter/early spring. I guess the key is to transplant without too much root disturbance and to let them go wild in the pot for one growing season before doing any work on the branch structure.
I'll keep you posted.
Lots of foliage and branches at the moment and tons of yellow star shaped flowers.
Should make a nice tree
Cheers

You have picked a VERY slow tree to do something with in 12 months C8B. I have yet to meet a fattish one.

OK so we're definitely not going to see this little guy with fat trunk, but 1 year on and through mostly clip n grow styling it's starting to get some ramification, the aim (apart from keeping up with the updates) is to get it into an appropriate sized pot and survive the transition.
EDIT: Current Height – 21cm

Update: not much happening here, it'll be good to get it into a smaller pot come spring.
