hello,

i was wanting to know if anyone knows anywhere around Adelaide where you can go and dig up trees?
does anyone know any properties around?

Best bet is to join a club if you want to go on a dig, are you after anything in particular?, there is a shari load of stuff just growing alongside of most roads, I recently picked up a couple of nice almond trees growing in the gravel on the side of the road, if its between the fence line and the road then its fair game I reckon , go for a drive take a look around and help yourself

Help yourself, I usually do .... or just get permission if you want, that will take you a few years, then when you do get permission you will have to block the road off with a road safety crew with signs and flashing lights, and sign a waiver whereby you promise not to sue anyone in pursuit of that aforementioned olive stump

i think the answer is obvious

Quiet country roads are the best bet so you don't make too many cars run off the road trying to work out why that idiot is praying to an olive stump.

Minimise the damage and clean up the area and fill holes as best you can after digging so bonsai growers don't get an even worse reputation as environmental vandals.
The secret to collecting good bonsai is to look at lots and take just a few - the ones with most potential obviously. The first ones you find will look great but after you get home you'll wonder what it was you saw in them so check several hundred before starting to dig.

Brownhill creek was once the choice place for the SA bonsai society to dig, as there is (or was) a large selection of olive and Hawthorn. It has been awhile since my last outing there, but they should be digging soon. Worth contacting them to find out

I think Brownhill creek is down to its last 100 000 olives so you better be quick

Hahaha yes, I heard stories that you didn't need to actually dig the trees out of the ground, rather just dig through the piles.
