The Green Beetle

I don't know if this is a goodie or a badie but it was quite colorful and thus a few photos. I don't know what it is but it did fly away after the photo shoot.

Looks like Eupoecila australasiae or the Green Fiddler Beetle.

They are nectar eaters but lay the eggs in damp soil and rotting logs, the larvae will then eat the rotting wood until they emerge.
Not sure I'd want the larvae.

Pretty though.

As a kid back in south Africa we used to get beetles very similar that used to get stuck into my dad's figs, we used to catch them and tie a string to one of the legs and keep them as pets. Wherever we walked around we'd have them buzzing around our head on a string. Probably have the rspca breathing down our necks nowadays
